Bells and Whistles
Walk Off The Earth have been together for a long time and I’ve seen them live quite a bit over the years. They’re a very good band, with very good singers and probably should have come on good fortune a long while ago. Whether or not this video was actually recorded live off the floor doesn’t really matter, what matters is the apparent bells and whistles it takes for a band to get noticed in our current youtube based music culture. Walk Off The Earth were a great band 4 years ago, but what gets them over one million views in a couple of days (which is unbelievably impressive) is a literal party trick. Even the people who acknowledge that it might be fake agree that whatever it is, it’s cool, and apparently this is what a really good band needs to do to set themselves apart. If you step back and compare the present situation of having many talented people covering current hits in order to get themselves noticed in what’s becoming more and more of a single based industry, it’s almost as if the 50s and 60s have returned, where someone like Elvis Presley became famous on other people’s compositions. Perhaps the times are changing and I’m probably playing on the wrong team.
